Warm Apple Buttermilk Custard Pie

Reviewed: Jan. 7, 2009
Very good recipe! A keeper! The reasons I gave it 4 stars are the following. I discovered we did not have any apples, so I used zucchini instead! Awesome!! Also, instead of using a ready made pie shell I made pie shell useing Ruth's Grandma's pie crust from this site! I also cut all sugar to half the amount listed. Came out just right! Wow! Excellent! Thanks for posting!

South African Yellow Rice

This was good, but very sweet. . . more like a dessert, almost. If I make it again, I will reduce the white sugar significantly.

Blueberry Oat Muffins

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2009
I was making a meal for a family whose son had dairy allergies and this recipe fit the bill. This recipe was easy to put together. It's very flavorful with the orange juice addition and that went well with the blueberries. My own kids loved it and I passed the recipe along to the family who received them. Thanks for a keeper of a recipe!

Carne Adovada

Reviewed: Jan. 6, 2009
This is really tasty. I didn't have any dried New Mexico chili powder so instead I took 3 cups of water and boiled it turning the heat off after it reached boiling. Meanwhile I took the stems and seeds out of 5 whole red chili's and added them to the hot water and let them sit and soak for about a half an hour or so, making sure they were completely submerged. After this I put water and chili's into the blender and pureed them. Then followed the rest of the recipe as stated except I ended up using the slow-cooker. I should have added more water cooking it this way because after I came home 8 hours later it was starting to burn to the bottom of the slow-cooker. I would suggest using a lot less salt as well because after you make the sauce and before you put it on the meat to marinade it is not salty at all but, after the meat has cooked and the sauce has thickened it is way too salty. Maybe use only half as much as it calls for.

Award Winning Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies

Reviewed: Jan. 5, 2009
I wish i could give these 3.5 stars.. They weren't bad, they just were too sweet for my tastes... They were very soft, but to me, they just didn't taste like a "homemade" cookie.. They tasted more like a mix or the refridgerated cookie dough at the grocery store... I actually prefer the recipe on the back of the nestle bag than these...

The kids and I loved it. Hubby complained about being "meat deprived" because I served this as a meal. Guess what? He survived. It was so wonderful, great flavor.

Mother's Ham Casserole

Reviewed: Jan. 5, 2009
An excellent choice for leftover ham! Very good flavor and not a smidgen of leftover appearance or taste. The sauce came together well at the end; liked not using 'cream of'. I used broccoli in place of carrot; just sounded better to me with potatoes, cheese, and ham. Also doubled the celery. I also changed the methods, as I generally don't care for boiled veggies, and I tried to cut down on the number of pans. Cooked the potatoes in the microwave in a casserole dish. (Which if I had used a large enough casserole dish, I could have used for the final dish!) Sauteed everything else in a skillet, and used that skillet for the sauce, after dumping the veggies out. (Saute the onions and celery first, til nearly transparent, then add the broccoli and green pepper.) I gave the sauce two tiny sprinkles of cayenne and one of nutmeg. (My standard for white sauce.) Next time I may add a bit more of the 'seasoning' veggies: onion, celery, and green pepper. Thanks for the recipe! PS: Watch the size of the casserole dish. The main ingredients add up to 6.5 cups which is a half-cup more than a 1.5 qt dish.

Absolutely fantastic! My hubby is from Chicago and the two things he misses the most are gyros and italian beef sandwiches. I made this last night for his birthday and it was fantastic! Sooo close to the italian beefs in Chicago! I made the recipe exactly as it is except i used a round roast because thats what i had. We raise our own meat and the grass fed beef tends to
